I’ve lost track of how many attempts I’ve made to finish watching this film, and now that I have, my feelings toward it aren't entirely negative. A dangerous scheme is unfolding globally, and "M" (played by John Huston) has persuaded his counterparts in France, Russia, and the United States that there’s only one solution to stop this evil plan. Then comes the first, newly-knighted, "Sir James Bond" (David Niven), who takes on the responsibility of leading a new "007" unit and hunting down the criminal leader behind "SMERSH"! What follows is divided into sections, each presenting a different piece of their investigation. These aren't necessarily unentertaining, but they feel somewhat manufactured to amplify the fabricated danger while allowing for as many brief appearances from the five directors involved in this lengthy film as possible—even Peter O’Toole must have had some bills to settle. Peter Sellers and the original "Bond" girl, Ursula Andress, help keep Niven and the whole thing moving forward, and for me, the scene with "Le Chifre" (Orson Welles) at the gambling tables is the strongest part of what there is to see. I believe it does a pretty good job of mocking the most ridiculous aspects of the 1960s—the overly patriotic elements, the vibrant colors—which were full of sexism and male privilege, and Niven seems very aware of the humor in it all. It's not a great film, and its anthology format fails more often than it succeeds, but it’s reflective of its era and still almost worth seeing.
