It’s easy to imagine Arthur Lowe drawing inspiration from Peter Cushing's portrayal of the meticulous and undeniably irritating bank manager in this excellent heist film. He runs his branch with complete disregard for his employees, as the opening scenes clearly illustrate—even on December 23rd! The story takes an unexpected turn when "Col. Gore Hepburn" (André Morell) appears, ostensibly from their insurance company to evaluate security procedures alongside the bank manager’s chief clerk, “Pearson” (Richard Vernon). However, it quickly becomes apparent that this visitor has a hidden agenda and resorts to rather harsh and intimidating tactics to achieve it. What unfolds is a tightly paced drama which provides Cushing an opportunity to showcase his acting abilities beyond what's typical for him, and Morell delivers a restrained but effective performance as well. The resolution felt somewhat lacking—I must admit I was let down by the ending—but for most of its ninety-minute length, this is a captivating narrative that even evokes a touch of "A Christmas Carol" at its close. It's definitely recommended viewing.
