Forget Cash on Delivery—this is Cash on Demand! Coming from Hammer Film Productions, the film was directed by Quentin Lawrence and written by David Chantler & Lewis Greifer, based on a play by Jacques Gillies. The cast includes Peter Cushing, Andre Morell, Richard Vernon, Norman Bird, and Kevin Stoney; Wilfred Josephs handled the music, with Arthur Grant as director of photography. Hammer’s holiday offering packs quite a punch. Early in Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction," Tim Roth describes to Amanda Plummer how someone robbed a bank using just a telephone—a concept central to Hammer’s excellent “Cash on Demand.” It’s an intense, well-made thriller that also showcases the acting abilities of Peter Cushing, Andre Morell, and Richard Vernon. Working with a small budget and largely confined to one set, director Lawrence achieves maximum suspense from the script without resorting to gore or graphic violence. The film thrives on sophisticated verbal exchanges; the tension comes from what could occur if Cushing's bank manager (who delivers a performance that subtly changes as the story progresses) doesn’t follow the instructions given by Morel's cunning thief, who keeps his intentions carefully hidden. It's a genuine find and an unexpected pleasure, both in its technical aspects and how the story plays out. It comes highly recommended to anyone devoted to Classic British Cinema. 9/10
