The title suggests some kind of thriller, which is probably what anyone would assume if they understood it correctly. The narrative maintained a sense of suspense, building that feeling for quite a while. It didn't have any significant surprises, just an explanation that resolved lingering questions. A lot of the plot felt familiar, resembling “Orphan,” which came out not long before this film. However, this is genuinely frightening horror, unlike the kind of terror-horror seen in "Orphan." The entire story hinged on a single, large secret that was revealed toward the end. I’ve watched many movies about child abuse, and while this one starts with a similar premise, it shifts direction near the end of the first act. When a social worker, Emily, discovers that ten-year-old Lilith has been mistreated by her parents, she removes Lilith from their care and they are arrested. Later, Emily becomes Lilith’s adoptive mother, but soon experiences unusual occurrences around her. This makes her suspicious of Lilith, though she can't find any proof. Uncovering the truth becomes her main focus, and how she intends to do it carries us toward the resolution. It felt good to see Renee Zellweger in a film again; she looked great here. Jodelle Ferland also did well as the young girl, who has the most important role. Bradley Cooper had a smaller part. I believe it’s an acceptable movie, but the subject matter isn't particularly original, even though it’s handled differently with a new set of actors. If you are someone who enjoys horror films, you might be let down because those elements were reduced and the suspense was emphasized. Many scenes, including the ending, are likely to be predictable for most viewers. Overall, I think it's worth watching. _6.5/10_
