It’s hard to imagine a film that requires less explanation than Casablanca—or honestly, any further analysis regarding its quality. The movie has achieved such widespread recognition that it’s become one of the most frequently referenced films in history (though sometimes those references are inaccurate), and perhaps more importantly, it's developed an iconic status that surpasses its artistic merit. While certainly a top-tier production for 1942, the people involved didn’t anticipate anything beyond a well-made film that would draw audiences to theaters. It was positively received when first released, benefiting from the Allied advances in North Africa, and managed to overcome the widely discussed issues during its creation—the script was reportedly reworked on a daily basis—to reach its current position as one of cinema’s most beloved works. I won't talk about Paris; that would be bad marketing! What is it that makes Casablanca so treasured and appreciated by every new generation? I simply experience each time I watch it (an annual tradition) the sensation of falling in love all over again, finding a fresh emotional resonance with each viewing. There are tears—both sad and happy—and a sense that romantic ideals haven't disappeared, which Casablanca effectively challenges for me personally. The film’s exploration of redemption offers a satisfying payoff, even as thoughts about missed opportunities and lost loves linger within Rick’s Café Américain. Everything about Casablanca feels just right, from the superb direction by Michael Curtiz to the memorable music, and naturally, the remarkable characters portrayed by an exceptionally talented cast. It may not be the absolute greatest film ever made, but for me, and those who allow it into their lives, it’s like having one of the best companions anyone could ask for. 10/10
