John Chard on Carry On Teacher

8/10 · Jun 13, 2015

The latest installment of the Carry On films places the familiar group in trouble at Maudlin Street Secondary Modern School. William Wakefield, the headmaster played by Ted Ray, is portrayed as an upright man who opposes physical discipline, a stance that has made him popular with the students. He’s contemplating a move to another school for advancement but first must manage the arrival of two inspectors and pray everything proceeds without incident. Naturally, things don't go according to plan; the students discover Wakefield’s intentions and begin causing disruption, primarily targeting the teaching staff. "Carry On Teacher" is a kindhearted addition to the franchise, relying on slapstick humor and amusing situations. The instructors argue and become overwhelmed by the children’s mischievousness and destructive acts, alongside some gentle romantic storylines developing in the background. It's also interesting to see the discussion about corporal punishment; Wakefield stands against it, while Maths teacher Grace Short, portrayed by Hattie Jacques, is a strong advocate for it. There’s even an element of feminism woven into Norman Hudis' writing. At its core, however, the film aims for laughs and revels in the mayhem as the familiar cast members navigate events with expertise and playful irony. A success at cinemas, "Carry On Teacher" embodies what made early Carry On movies so appealing—it offers subtle commentary on society and a simple view of the education system, making it difficult to find fault with. 8/10
