John Chard on Carry On Spying

9/10 · Jul 1, 2015

I thought it would be a man or a woman. This installment, number nine in the Carry On sequence and the final one shot in black and white, stands out as among the strongest. It has the group playfully taking on Pinewood Studios, their production base. The studio that housed James Bond also served as home to the Carry On team, so with Peter Rogers, Gerald Thomas and Talbot Rothwell recognizing a chance to poke fun at 007, they seized it, while also enjoying the opportunity for some film noir-inspired moments, specifically referencing *The Third Man*. Kenneth Williams leads the cast this time, joined by Barbara Windsor (in her first Carry On role), Bernard Cribbins, and Charles Hawtrey. They portray four rather unremarkable agents of British Intelligence who are trying to recover a classified formula that’s been taken by STENCH. Along the way, they receive assistance from Carstairs (Jim Dale), and it remains unclear exactly what the enigmatic organization known as SNOG is—are they allies or working with the villainous Dr. Crow? Despite containing some suggestive jokes, "Spying" still connects with the more good-natured humor seen in earlier films—particularly those filmed in black and white. It’s straightforward comedy, full of lively visuals and clever dialogue. Even now, it remains entertaining; yes, it's a bit silly, but there’s a sense of originality that allows some very talented performers to display their abilities. The film also looks wonderful, with Alan Hume’s noir-style photography really shining. This is an excellent Carry On movie for viewers who like their humor more lighthearted than the later, more overtly risqué entries. 9/10
