The matron, played by Hattie Jacques, maintains strict control over the nurses, while Wilfred Hyde-White keeps everyone else in line as the "Colonel." It seems the patients at "Haven Hospital" might be safer outside, on a highway, than within the ward itself! The film progresses from one small mishap to another until “Jack’s” (Leslie Phillips) bunion operation is postponed. After enjoying a few drinks, the patients decide surgery isn't so important and take over a theater late at night to try and perform it themselves! It's enough to be quite shocking. Jacques truly shines when playing an authoritative character, and there are some amusing schemes devised by both the patients and the overworked nurses to retaliate against her strictness. The comedy is straightforward, with moments of physical humor and even a little bit of romance—along with some excessively clean catheter tubes and several quirky storylines that allow each performer their chance to shine. It’s not my top pick; it can feel rather predictable at times, but it's still enjoyable if you embrace the (medical) mood.
