The Bun and Oven Wards are accessible at Finisham Maternity Hospital. This marks the twenty-third installment in the Carry On franchise, representing the fourth—and final—chapter focusing on a medical setting. Sid Carter (Sid James) spearheads a group of thieves with a scheme to infiltrate Finisham Hospital and pilfer a large quantity of contraceptive pills for export. However, pinpointing their location proves challenging. Consequently, Sid dispatches his son, Cyril (Kenneth Cope), undercover, posing as a nurse. What might now appear as simplistic jokes generates considerable amusement from the situations involving someone pretending to be a female nurse. This leads to him sharing quarters with an attractive woman (Babs Windsor), fending off the advances of the overly enthusiastic Doctor Prodd (played brilliantly by Terry Scott), and becoming entangled in medical complications he’s completely unfamiliar with—a particularly awkward situation given that it's a maternity hospital! Separately, Joan Simms embodies a ravenous character who is three weeks past her due date, while her distressed railway worker husband (Kenneth Connor, consistently excellent) descends into madness within the waiting area. Kenneth Williams takes on the role of an anxious hospital administrator, and Hattie Jacques receives memorable moments in a film whose title and script recognize her contributions to the medical-themed Carry On movies. Directed with efficiency by Gerald Thomas, "Matron" stands out as one of the more enjoyable and humorous Carry On films from the 1970s. It earns a rating of 7.5/10.
