It’s genuinely true that not knowing everything can sometimes be a good thing! As the nineteen seventies got underway, the makers of Carry On films kept going strong, ignoring changing times and instead welcoming them with jokes full of double meanings – for both good and bad reasons. "Loving" features Sid James and Hattie Jacques as a couple pretending to be happily married, running a computer dating service. The story revolves around several lonely people who hope the "Bliss Agency" will find them love, but they only encounter one problem after another, with terrible matches happening again and again. The plot isn’t really there; it's similar to Carry On Regardless, but instead of those film’s short, pleasant stories, this one has more openly suggestive and risqué situations. Terry Scott and James seem to enjoy playing mischievous older men, both getting into a series of uncomfortable circumstances involving upset girlfriends and boyfriends. Kenny Williams is the highlight of the script as a marriage counselor – and lifelong bachelor – who's completely overwhelmed when things get difficult, while Jacki Piper and Imogen Hassall certainly attract attention with revealing clothing. The nineteen seventies would turn out to be a difficult time for the series, and this feels like the beginning of a decline, which is disappointing because Carry On Up the Jungle was also released that year and was quite good. "Loving" does have some merit; Sid and Hattie are entertaining as an argumentative couple, and Williams and Scott commit fully to their parts – plus Bernard Bresslaw has great moments as a large wrestler jealous of Joan Sims’ attention from Sid James! But it feels contrived, and while there are a few things for fans to appreciate, the best days of Carry On Up the Kyber and the financial success of Carry On Camping seem like distant memories. 6/10
