John Chard on Carry On Henry

7/10 · Jul 19, 2015

Henry Tudor has become quite impolite! This, the twenty-first installment of the extended Carry On franchise, delivers a risqué look at the reign of King Henry VIII (Sid James). The monarch is currently wed to Queen Marie of Normandy (Joan Sims), but his marital happiness is threatened because she consumes an excessive amount of garlic. Consequently, he devises a plan to remove her from the picture; however, he must proceed with caution as conflict with France could easily erupt if anything were to befall the Queen. Some of the most enjoyable Carry On films in color are those that take place during a historical period. *Carry On Henry* isn’t among the strongest examples of this type of film, but it's still entertaining and will satisfy viewers who appreciate the series’ suggestive humor. Sid James embodies womanizing and heavy drinking, and Barbara Windsor showcases her overtly sexual persona, which gives this film its characteristic appeal. Terry Scott (with his remarkable physical gestures), Kenny Williams (a consistently delightful counterpart to Scott), and Charles Hawtrey move around with obvious delight. The comedy maintains a high level of energy throughout the runtime, while the set design and costumes are impressively elaborate. A subplot involving the Gunpowder Plot is present, which proves amusing but also highlights Kenneth Connor’s limited role; nevertheless, suggestive remarks and intentionally corny jokes are always available to amuse those who enjoy this facet of the well-known British franchise. 7/10
