I had a difficult time with this one. The story revolves around "Capt. Fancey" (played by Kenneth Williams) as he searches for the notorious highwayman "Dick Turpin"—or “Big Dick,” as he’s known. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the standard for the rather vulgar and uninspired jokes that run throughout this fairly unremarkable historical film. The more of these "Carry On" movies I see, the clearer it becomes how important Joan Sims was, and she does well here as "Madame Desirée," but the other actors seem happy to lead us down a predictable route filled with clichés, physical comedy, and a narrative that feels like a weak imitation of "Doctor Syn" (1937). This series is nearing its conclusion now; the cleverness and lighthearted humor found in those made a decade earlier have been swapped for an almost overtly crude style of comedy that isn't anyone’s best effort. I must say, I considered this to be quite disappointing.
