I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that. The 26th installment, Carry on Dick, signaled the close of an era for several reasons. It was the final appearance for Sid James, Hattie Jaques and Barbara Windsor, as well as the last one written by Talbot Rothwell. As the title implies, the series had fully embraced innuendo by this point; here, they use the story of Dick Turpin and wrap it in suggestive jokes and double entendres. The character names are quite something - Reverend Flasher, Big Dick, Desmond Fancey (also known as Dandy Desmond), Jock Strapp, and Constable – so it’s definitely low-brow stuff. It's good to see Sid James back in a period setting with a dual role, like in Don't Lose Your Head; he’s fairly controlled as Reverend Flasher, but then switches to throaty laughter and cheeky behavior as the lecherous highwayman, Big Dick! Windsor is along playing her typical alluring part opposite James, though Peter Butterworth and Kenneth Connor don’t get enough material to make a significant impact. Kenny Williams gets some opportunities for an over-the-top portrayal, even if this pairing with Jack Douglas feels like a rehash of something from Carry on Don't Lose Your Head. Carry On Behind came after this one; it was pretty good and, looking back, probably should have been the series’ ending. Carry on Dick attempted to keep the fun going (a bit suggestive) for the series, trying to hold onto the historical/period films that had been so well-liked in the previous decade. It isn't a proper goodbye for some of the main actors, but there are some good jokes and energetic performances that mean it doesn’t embarrass itself with fans who enjoyed a little spice with their "Carry On" film. 7/10
