John Chard on Carry On Cowboy

8/10 · Feb 19, 2017

The Rumpo Kid and a parody done right. When Judge Burke requests assistance to eliminate The Rumpo Kid and his group from Stodge City, he anticipates a skilled Marshall arriving. What he gets instead is Marshall P. Knutt, who happens to be a sanitary engineer by trade. In 1964, the creators of "Carry On" tried their hand at spoofing films for the first time with Carry On Cleo. That movie was very popular and many consider it the strongest in the series, leading the team of Thomas, Rogers, and Rothwell to think that imitating movies could be a good direction for future installments. A year later came Carry On Cowboy. With an understanding of the genre’s tropes, screenwriter Talbot Rothwell crafted what is considered one of the best parodies ever made. The familiar cartoonish energy and playful comments are present, but Carry On Cowboy feels more streamlined and even somewhat darker than other films in the series. Standing alone, separate from the "Carry On" title, it's a good comedy with moments of violence and a revenge storyline (thanks to Angela Douglas as Annie Oakley). It’s also one of the few movies where the performers are asked to do more than just provide laughs and double entendres. Sid James, Kenneth Williams, and Joan Sims meet those expectations, pleased that Jim Dale and Charles Hawtrey were around to steal (and receive) the comedic moments. 8/10
