The precinct is having trouble maintaining order, because three veteran officers are out sick, and Inspector Mills finds himself short-handed. Fortunately, Sergeant Wilkins, who understands the streets, believes he has a plan for handling the new recruits brought in to help. That proves to be an error, especially when Gorse is put in charge of the operations room – things were already pretty wild at that point. I’ve always felt these movies are strongest when James, Sims, Williams, and Jacques are doing what they're known for, and mostly here they do just that. However, I thought Leslie Phillips and Kenneth Connor were a little flat, and their attempts at humor seemed more like tasteless jokes than anything else. Nevertheless, the film moves along quickly; the script is among the better ones in the series, and there are numerous silly situations and suggestive remarks as it gently pokes fun at a police force that seems to have just as many oddballs working for it as it does dealing with outside of it.
