It had been quite some time since I last saw the initial Carrie film, and to be honest, I wasn’t really fond of it back then. I felt like it dragged on too long and the final scene was excessively bleak. Perhaps that's because I was younger when I first experienced it. Recently, I decided to watch the reimagining. I have to admit, I found it unexpectedly enjoyable. While the narrative itself—a young girl tormented by cruel classmates, specifically one particularly awful individual—isn’t exactly something I find appealing, and is frankly quite depressing and irritating, I've always watched these kinds of movies for the telekinetic displays. That being said, I believe both Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore delivered strong performances. Julianne Moore, in particular, really got under my skin, making me feel uncomfortable and irritated as she launched into her fanatical religious pronouncements. Remakes are inevitably at a disadvantage because you already know the basic plot and what’s going to unfold. So I appreciated that they incorporated bursts of telekinetic action—the special effects—throughout the earlier sections of the film. As far as I can recall, Carrie didn't showcase her abilities until near the very end in the original movie. For me, this made the remake more engaging; it would have been tedious and frustrating if all we had was constant bullying from the students and Carrie’s unstable mother until the conclusion. The ending, though—I still find it pretty sad. I would've preferred to see Carrie get even and somehow live through it all, but then, that would have strayed too far from the source material, so I suppose I need to accept the downbeat resolution. Overall, I’m pleasantly surprised by this film. It manages to bring a contemporary feel and enhanced special effects without losing the essence of the original.
