Reno on Carrie Pilby

7/10 · Aug 18, 2017

I’ve learned that things unfold as they will, and we need to adapt while striving to make good decisions! It turned out to be a stronger movie than I initially expected, largely because of how it was received. The film is an adaptation of the book with the same title, and it's directed by someone relatively new to filmmaking. It’s a coming-of-age story centered on a 19-year-old intelligent woman who finds herself having difficulty adjusting to life after finishing school. A significant part of her struggle involves communication issues with her father. She isn't unable to fit in, but she tends to get absorbed in the things that genuinely interest her. Then, her therapist suggests creating a list of goals to move beyond what he considers a rather monotonous existence. The story continues by detailing the experiences she has while trying to do so. Bel Powley was outstanding as the main character; it felt like a continuation of her previous film 'The Diary of a Teenage Girl,' almost as if it were the next chapter in that person’s journey, existing somewhere between adolescence and adulthood. The supporting cast was adequate too. I generally enjoy films of this type, but they often follow predictable patterns. From that viewpoint, it isn't particularly remarkable, especially for those who have seen many similar stories. It’s not a bad film to watch once, though. Despite the different characters, actors, and locations, and because the presentation was well-done, it would be enjoyable to view on a relaxed weekend. It seems likely that it will be overlooked, but it's certainly one of the more subtle films of the year. _7/10_
