“Jonathan” (played by Jack Nicholson) offers his roommate “Sandy” (Art Garfunkel), who seems anxious about “Susan” (Candice Bergen), some encouragement. What follows is a detailed account of their developing relationship, which quickly takes a turn when “Jonathan” begins an affair with her. They manage to keep this hidden from “Sandy” for a while, and the three even become part of the same social circle; however, dishonesty lingers beneath the surface. It seems throughout their lives that people are taking from one another until “Bobbie” (Ann-Margret) enters the picture and gives “Jonathan” an opportunity to form a relationship with someone else. She’s a character who wants stability—a husband, a child, a home. However, with “Sandy” now pursuing “Cindy” (Cynthia O’Neal), it looks like this pattern is about to repeat itself. Will either of these men ever find lasting happiness and security, or will this love triangle continue throughout their lives? Garfunkel does a good job portraying the kindhearted and sensitive young man, but Nicholson truly stands out as the imperfect and irritating character who takes advantage of situations, only to later feel isolated and deprived of what he desires. The film can occasionally feel overly talkative about their misdeeds, which gives it an odd quality—a combination of predatory behavior and a lack of genuine connection—though Bergen and especially Ann-Margret’s performance add some impact. The cinematography often resembles a documentary style, with the camera directly facing the characters so you don't always know who is speaking or listening, or even who else is present. I readily developed a dislike for “Jonathan,” but as the story unfolds, I began to feel sorry for him; that speaks to the quality of the acting and writing. There’s quite a bit of female nudity in the film, yet Nicholson is consistently obscured by objects like plants, towels, or steam.
