Several aspects of Career Opportunities prevent it from truly succeeding. The film doesn't show us what Jim and Josie’s time at school was like, which makes their connection feel shallow and leaves you wondering why they do what they do. Additionally, we aren’t given any explanation for how Jim brought Nestor and Gil into the Salzburg murder case, resulting in a missing piece of the story. The plot also depends on events that are hard to believe: Jim's cleaning shift goes on forever as he engages in various activities, the robbers move around without restriction through an unlocked door even though he’s supposedly locked in, and he just happens to find the safe key in a drawer with no indication it was there beforehand. These unlikely occurrences damage the story's believability and lessen its effect.
