The title doesn’t quite match what the movie is about; it's not a sports film, although there are elements of that genre present. A more fitting name would have referenced “diary,” as that becomes central to the story. The plot revolves around a homeless man who discovers a diary discarded in the trash. It details the life of a young girl grieving her mother and living with an abusive uncle, revealing a difficult existence. He recognizes parallels between his own experiences and hers and begins responding to the entries by sending them off as paper airplanes, since he doesn’t know her identity or location. The man also earns money through street fighting, which unfortunately goes wrong one day, leading to a specific outcome that concludes the narrative. It's an admirable film made on a limited budget. It carries a sentimental tone but didn’t fully realize its potential. I’ve seen Thomas Haden Church in several movies, but never in such a prominent role. He essentially carried the entire film, although other characters appear frequently. While his performance was good, I had higher expectations, and the screenplay is partly to blame. However, I appreciated the straightforward drama; simplicity can be more enjoyable than complex plot twists or excessive developments. If you’re willing to take risks on smaller films, this one might appeal to you. It's not a masterpiece, but a touching ending helps redeem it.
