It might surprise you to discover that this isn’t quite as dreadful as expectations suggest! Horst Janson, a muscular performer, portrays the central warrior figure—reminiscent of “Conan”—who finds himself in a village populated by people who appear to have aged before their time. The mystery surrounding this situation directs him toward the castle belonging to the Durward family, where siblings Paul (Shane Briant) and Sara (Lois Daine) reside. We learn early on that their mother, confined to bed, has a particular dietary requirement, though its true purpose isn’t revealed until later in the story. It will be up to our protagonist to stop this bizarre and perilous scheme, or else many more villagers will become part of it! The film is not particularly well-made; there's an abundance of unnecessary dialogue and a lack of thrilling swordplay and action, but it maintains a playful tone throughout. It aims for humor and acknowledges that the plot developments are obvious, and the performances—particularly Caroline Munro’s—are both wooden and occasionally over-the-top. There’s plenty of gore, some effective displays of distress from those about to be eaten, and a cameo appearance by Wanda Ventham toward the conclusion. It's easily overlooked, but it manages to entertain for ninety minutes if you’re looking for something undemanding with a bit of an edge!
