The movie delivers enjoyment and excitement, and occasionally boasts striking visuals, although it falls short of being truly exceptional. With Errol Flynn unavailable, Gregory Peck takes on the role of Hornblower, reportedly one of his preferred performances; however, he seems a little too restrained to fully inhabit the part. Virginia Mayo’s casting as Lady Barbara Wellesley feels similarly off, despite her beauty, and though this might seem strange, these choices don't seriously damage the film, largely thanks to Raoul Walsh’s skillful direction. The story moves along briskly, so one doesn't dwell too much on whether the actors are entirely convincing in their roles. Guy Green’s cinematography and Robert Farnon’s lively musical score help keep things engaging, guiding the audience through a pleasant experience. The sets are impressive, and the ship designs are top-notch, culminating in a thrilling battle sequence toward the end filled with grand gestures. It's something I could suggest to people who like adventure stories, even if it isn’t flawless and feels like a missed chance. Ultimately, though, it proves to be quite entertaining for viewers of all ages. 6/10
