Reno on Captain Fantastic

8/10 · Nov 23, 2016

The movie demonstrates that existing isn't simply about learning; physical preparedness is also essential. This film comes from someone who transitioned from acting to directing, and it’s only his second project. He wrote and directed this beautiful film, which I consider among the best of recent years—it deserves a spot on any must-see list. It reminded me somewhat of 'Alabama Moon,' particularly in its initial plot that unfolds over more than an hour. The casting was exceptional; it's full of potential stars. While it largely feels like a road movie, that impression fades after the first few minutes. I didn’t love every aspect of the film; I found certain parts unsettling. Specifically, the scene where a deer is killed at the beginning and the ending felt problematic. The conclusion itself seemed like the most appropriate resolution for the narrative, even if it wasn't entirely aligned with the central theme. However, the final shot left me feeling as though some compromise had occurred—as if all that hard work ended up being abandoned. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would suggest others see it. It’s a very distinctive film that made a clear effort to steer clear of typical tropes. The story centers on a father raising his six children in the wilderness, away from society. These kids aren't isolated from knowledge; they are well-versed in worldly philosophies, which become their favorite subject. They are both intelligent and resilient, capable of surviving any situation. When they receive news of their mother’s death, they embark on a journey to attend her funeral, and the adventures that unfold along the way form the core of the film. Because of copyright restrictions, the birthday song was changed. Interestingly, the movie isn't based on a book. I want to express my sincere appreciation for the creator of this wonderful work; it’s destined to become a cult classic. The film features great dialogue and straightforward revelations about the realities of the world—particularly regarding topics like sex and other mature subjects that address children’s questions. I initially thought it might be suitable for kids to watch with their parents, but I don't think that holds up upon further consideration. With so many young characters in prominent roles, this film isn't appropriate viewing for them. However, adults should definitely see it, regardless of their beliefs. I highly recommend it. _8/10_
