Philip Seymour Hoffman gives an impressive and absorbing performance as the celebrated writer in the late 1950s. While working on his next book, he learns about the savage killing of a Kansas family. Without much hesitation, this somewhat dissatisfied author determines that this event offers him a valuable opportunity, and through nearly every available (lawful) method, manages to gain favor with those connected to the victims. After police arrest two suspects, he does the same with Perry Smith, played by Clifton Collins Jnr. His plan is to utilize this case and the personalities involved as inspiration for a novel—one rooted in reality rather than invention. What follows is an intelligently assembled examination of how a clever and astute man uses his mind to control circumstances to get what he desires, when he wants it. However, this also reveals some weaknesses in his controlling nature. He starts developing a connection with the person he’s observing; he develops an affection that undermines his ability to be impartial about his narrative, and the accused begins to make him seem more relatable—a previously distant and rather conceited individual. A noticeable change in power dynamics occurs. The film features a well-chosen cast, with considerable focus on Hoffman's performance, Collins’ solid portrayal, and Catherine Keener’s helpful contribution as someone who reflects Capote’s thoughts and actions. The production design, the meticulousness of the details, and Mychael Danna’s score all enhance this, admittedly imaginative, drama that explores not only what motivated this man but also aspects of American society at the time.
