Robert De Niro’s portrayal of Al Capone in The Untouchables had a visceral impact; it was unsettling enough to be genuinely shocking. Tom Hardy's depiction of Capone, however, is more pathetic—he’s the one experiencing literal mishaps. In The Godfather, Don Vito Corleone arranges for a horse head to appear in Jack Woltz's bedroom, delivered by Luca Brassi. Conversely, in Capone, the main character only leaves behind remnants of his dinner on his own bed after he’s finished eating. The film Capone focuses on Al Capone’s final year, a period when he was deemed harmless—a danger only to himself and his bedding. It's likely the second worst entry in the story of Al Capone, following The Mystery of Al Capone's Vaults. Like Geraldo Rivera’s attempt to unlock a vault, this film promises access to Capone’s mind during his last days, but it’s equally unsatisfying. Ideally, a movie shouldn't be so poor when it features actors like Hardy (or the Hardy I recall from The Revenant), Kyle MacLachlan, and Matt Dillon, yet Capone offers them little of substance. MacLachlan seems disoriented, as if he wandered away from a Twin Peaks set; Dillon’s talent is squandered on a routine reminiscent of The Sixth Sense; and Hardy spends the entire movie with a prosthetic mask covering his face and skull, making him resemble Michael Myers in Halloween 3000: Massacre at the Old Folks Home. The most significant flaw lies in the fact that much of what we see occurs within Capone’s feverish, declining mind. While exploring a character's mental deterioration can be effective—as seen in The Machinist—the issue here is that director and writer Josh Trank seems to be inventing what transpired in Al Capone’s head during his final days. This creates an unnecessary layer of unreality. Essentially, the film presents two layers of fiction: the character’s delusions, and then the filmmaker's speculation about those delusions. There's no reason to believe we'll learn anything new from this approach, and ultimately it fails to offer any meaningful or important information about Capone.
