"Cannonball Run II," appearing in 1983 with Hal Needham at the helm, centers on a follow-up Cannonball Run race spanning from coast to coast. The movie assembles various teams, including JJ & Victor portrayed by Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise, alongside Blake and Fenderbaum, played by Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.. Other pairings include Jackie Chan & Richard Kiel piloting a submersible Mitsubishi Starion, and Mel Tillis & Tony Danza with an orangutan companion. A large number of other recognizable performers also appear in smaller parts: Jamie Farr, Telly Savalas, Sid Caesar, Tim Conway, Foster Brooks, Ricardo Montalban, Charles Nelson Reilly, Don Knotts, among others. It's a diverting movie that doesn’t require much thought, and the impressive cast makes it worthwhile to see. The writing could have used some improvement with funnier jokes; clearly, the filmmakers didn't want to spend extra money on that. Consequently, many of the comedic moments don’t quite land, but even so, “Cannonball Run II” is significantly better than similar low-quality films such as "Smokey and the Bandit Part 3" (1983). There's also a funny bit where Dom DeLuise does an impression of Marlon Brando. The movie also earns points for its female performers, particularly Catherine Bach who looks stunning in blue spandex during the initial portion of the film, alongside her tall partner Susan Anton. Bach appears to have been perfectly formed. Marilu Henner and Shirley MacLaine are also featured, posing as nuns before their true identities are revealed while traveling with JJ & Victor. MacLaine was 48 years old when filming took place but still maintained a lovely figure. The film’s length is 1 hour, 48 minutes, and shooting locations included Nevada (Las Vegas, Henderson), Arizona (Tucson, Bisbee) and California (Redondo Beach). Grade: C
