This film offers a charming and heartwarming reimagining of "Little Lord Fauntleroy," featuring a really good group of actors. David Niven is particularly effective, demonstrating his talent for understated acting, which shines through here. The story involves Jodie Foster portraying an American girl living on the streets who is hired by the dishonest “Mr. Bundage” (Leo McKern). Her task is to go to England and pretend to be the missing granddaughter of the Marchioness of St. Edmund (Helen Hayes), with the goal of helping him find a secret stash of pirate gold coins. Upon her arrival, she manages to win over the old woman. However, she quickly realizes that things aren’t as they seem; the house is deeply in debt, and Niven plays a variety of roles – butler, gardener, driver – all while trying to conceal their financial troubles from Hayes. As one could anticipate, Foster outsmarts her manipulative employer, leading to a humorous adventure with a predictably cheerful resolution. It feels very much like a classic Disney production—a pleasant and entertaining portrayal of goodness and kindness triumphing.
