Horror anthology movies have been a go-to for horror fans for years. As with most of these kinds of films, the quality of individual segments can be uneven – and that’s just how it is. Campfire Tales serves as an example. It's something of a small pleasure for those who enjoy this type of film; it presents four main stories connected by a framing device where four teenagers share tales around a campfire after their car breaks down. In my experience with anthologies, the quality usually gets better as each story unfolds, but Campfire Tales is different: it starts off poorly, has two really good segments in the middle, and then finishes with a disappointing and lackluster conclusion that leads to the predictable reveal at the film’s end. The movie's poster features Amy Smart and James Marsden prominently, which isn’t entirely accurate since their appearances are limited. Their story, "The Hook," kicks things off and it's not good – lacking scares and suspense, and attempting a chilling reveal that ends up being more comical (even strange) than frightening. "The Honeymoon" follows and marks a significant improvement. Drawing on one of the most well-known urban legends, this segment involves a young couple on their honeymoon who become stranded in the woods when their camper van runs out of gas. Decisions are made, a sense of menacing dread builds, all leading to a genuinely shocking ending. “People Can Lick Too” is next, featuring a young girl home alone and stalked by a predator she met online. The whole episode has an unsettling atmosphere, with some reveals that send chills down your spine. The conclusion is truly startling and disturbing. The final segment, "The Locket," features good acting but ultimately feels more sentimental and dreamlike than scary or unsettling. Though the ending will likely appeal to many viewers. There's a nice musical score here too. Then comes the reveal, which feels lifted straight from The Twilight Zone and countless other films of its kind. It’s enjoyable overall, even if not every story is a home run. 7.5/10
