A paranormal investigation group faces pressure to produce a successful episode or risk losing their show’s fourth season. To that end, they select an abandoned church camp in Oklahoma as their location—a place with a dark history, having been the site of a 1990 tragedy where 28 children were poisoned and drowned. “Camp Cold Brook” (2018) seems to draw inspiration from films like “The Blair Witch Project,” “Death Tunnel,” and "Friday the 13th." The initial setup is promising, and the final section provides a satisfying resolution; however, the middle portion involves the four investigators spending four days at the unsettling, deserted camp, filming with cameras in an attempt to gather enough footage for a ratings success. Chad Michael Murray stands out as a developed character, which works well. Candice De Visser’s portrayal of Emma is also noteworthy, though to a lesser extent. Michael Eric Reid takes on the role of the group's comic relief (Kevin), and petite Danielle Harris (Angela) completes the main cast—many viewers will likely recognize her from “Halloween 4” and “Halloween 5.” The film could have benefitted from casting a performer with the presence of Joelle Westwood in "The Hunting" (2021/2022); while Danielle is capable, it feels like an opportunity was missed to showcase a woman effectively through cinematography. Despite its similarities to other works, the movie is well-made, featuring understated woodland eeriness and a strong conclusion. Those seeking graphic horror elements probably won't find them here. The film’s runtime is 1 hour and 29 minutes; it was filmed in Guthrie, Oklahoma, approximately 10 miles north of Oklahoma City, as well as Edmond and Jones, which are situated between those two cities.
