_Call of the Void_ is particularly successful in building suspense. The narrative unfolds, and Cox gradually leads the audience toward the anticipated conclusion, but there’s no moment where it seems logical for Moray to escape until the very end. Admittedly, the group appears somewhat distant—particularly the men—though they have a reason: their weekend has been disrupted by an overly attached neighbor who wants to be left alone. And while Sterling does have unusual guidelines for his hikes, there’s nothing inherently dangerous about spending some time in the woods practicing meditation.
