This Neil Simon film feels uneven, presenting stories of four families whose paths cross while staying at the Beverly Hills Hotel. One family, the Warrens—Jane Fonda and Alan Alda—are dealing with their teenage daughter's desire to spend more time with her father, which creates uncertainty and tension for the mother who has custody. Walter Matthau plays "Marvin," arriving before his wife, Elaine May’s “Millie,” and encountering a troublesome hooker whose sense of timing is severely lacking. Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby portray brothers accompanied by their wives; an accidental mix-up results in one couple enjoying lavish accommodations while the other gets stuck with something far less desirable. The strongest parts of the story involve Maggie Smith and Michael Caine as a married couple where she’s been nominated for an Oscar, leading to pre-ceremony jitters, excessive gin consumption, and a persistent need for reassurance from her husband, who isn't overly effusive in his praise. These moments offer some of the film's sharpest wit and sarcasm, although they become less frequent after the midpoint. The Pryor/Cosby and Matthau/May storylines feel forced and don’t quite land as well, and the early dramatic scenes mostly give Fonda an opportunity to deliver extended speeches—some of which contain clever lines. While it does satirize certain aspects of celebrity culture and superficiality, I found the storytelling structure somewhat fragmented and not consistently amusing.
