John Chard on Calendar Girls

7/10 · Aug 18, 2019

It's important to note a distinction: they are nude, not naked. After Annie Clarke’s husband dies from leukemia, her friend Chris suggests an unusual way to collect money for the hospital that treated him. Along with other members of the Knapely Women’s Institute, they decide to have their photos taken in the nude and sell them as a calendar! Inspired by a real event, and following the success of *The Full Monty* from 1997, this seemed like an obvious story for a movie. It also provides opportunities for actresses who often find themselves without good roles. While *Calendar Girls* isn’t a perfect film, it's undeniably enjoyable and heartwarming, even though the final section feels somewhat drawn out. The acting is consistently strong; Julie Walters, Helen Mirren (who looks fantastic), Linda Bassett, Annette Crosbie, and Geraldine James all leave a lasting impression in this story about a small community struggling with a sensitive issue. Then media attention arrives, which changes things for the women—and also shifts the film's focus. The movie successfully balances humor and drama. The comedic parts are genuinely funny and frequent throughout most of the film, while the dramatic elements, concerning a serious topic at its heart, are quite moving. Unfortunately, in the last third, some unnecessary exploration of friendships and relationships is added, which almost damages the overall experience. However, it manages to recover thanks to the excellent cast and the story’s sincere perspective, making it memorable. We should definitely celebrate these wonderful Calendar Girls. 7/10
