This film goes by several titles. The original Russian name is Vychislitel, but in English it's called Calculator, Titanium in French, and Titanium – Strafplanet XT-59 in German. As far as I can tell, the English title is the closest to the original Russian one. I’ll admit that understanding this movie was difficult because it’s in Russian, and my knowledge of the language isn't very good. So we had to watch it with French audio, which I usually avoid. It seems the French aren’t keen on foreign films, and even when a film is on Blu-ray they often only include a French soundtrack if the original wasn't in English. Consequently, my comprehension suffered because my French isn't strong enough to catch all of the subtleties. Regardless, it’s a fairly good little science fiction movie, though not exceptional. The plot isn’t particularly groundbreaking. It takes place on a planet that is unfriendly to humans and where an authoritarian government controls every aspect of people’s lives, including who they marry. A group of prisoners facing execution are released onto the planet's surface, expecting them to die. Some don’t, however, and embark on a journey that leads them to a secret location with a means of escape. The movie follows their experiences during this journey. My oldest son and I bought it after seeing the trailer on television (I know, you shouldn’t buy a film based solely on the trailer) because it looked pretty cool, featuring some original special effects. There are indeed some impressive-looking special effects in the film. The dark and desolate landscape is striking, and there are several unique life forms present—all of them quite hostile to any living thing that moves, naturally. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like a huge budget was available for this movie's production. While the creatures and scenery are good, much of the film involves people walking, talking, or arguing. A lot of the exciting elements were shown in the trailer, though. That said, the acting and visuals were still decent, even if I struggled to follow all of the dialogue at times. Overall, it's an interesting movie for science fiction fans, but those seeking a film packed with special effects and action will likely be let down. It wasn’t a complete waste of time for me—I am a fan of science fiction after all—but it didn’t elicit that feeling of having seen something truly great either.
