A young fisherman named "Adam" (Tawfeek Barhom) gets a letter that will alter his course. He’s been accepted to Al-Azhar University, and after saying goodbye to his family, he travels to Cairo. At the same time, the Grand Imam passes away, which is a major event for both the Sunni community and the government. The President announces through his National Security agency who he wants to take over the position. To make sure the election goes as planned, "Col. Ibrahim" (Fares Fares), appearing somewhat unkempt, is brought in. He already has an informant at the school, but when "Zizo" (Mehdi Dehbi) turns up dead in the courtyard, the Colonel needs to find someone else – and he chooses Adam, using a mix of threats and promises that works pretty well. The film then follows the dangerous path this young student must navigate as he’s used by those in power while trying to keep his family safe from retaliation if he fails—and avoiding colleagues who have their own agendas. It's a believable and occasionally unsettling portrayal of how easily governmental institutions can control, or get others to control, seemingly important processes. There’s a disheartening sense of what will happen with the election as things unfold! The central plot isn’t the strongest; some elements are left unclear—for instance, much about the “Blind Sheikh” (Makram Khoury) is not fully explored; and a couple of scenes feel cut short and resolved too easily. I initially thought it was going somewhere far more intense and violent, which might have been preferable to how it concludes, but you can decide for yourself. It's a well-crafted, dark political drama that questions established power structures and leaves a lingering feeling of dissatisfaction. The two main actors are strong in their roles, and the film is definitely something to make you think about. The scenery and architecture are also quite beautiful.
