This is a visually impressive production, although it lacks a certain spark, based on George Bernard Shaw’s portrayal of the connection between Julius Caesar—brought to life with playful energy by Claude Rains—and a youthful Cleopatra, portrayed by Vivien Leigh. The narrative focuses on their manipulative interactions and developing romance alongside a complex struggle for dominance. Cecil Parker and Flora Robson offer some welcome liveliness, but generally the film suffers from a rigid script. While Stewart Granger attempts to add excitement, the final result doesn’t quite rise above being merely the combination of its individual elements. It's certainly beautiful to behold; the costumes and scenery are exceptional, yet something is missing that would allow it to truly shine.
