It's certainly admirable to dedicate oneself to assisting those who are struggling, even when facing setbacks and indifference. Occasionally, however, there’s someone who persists in advocating for vulnerable people, like Italian immigrant Mother Francesca Cabrini (played by Cristiana Dell’Anna). After arriving in New York City in 1889, the small but determined nun from Lombardy began working to provide sustenance, shelter, and medical assistance to her fellow immigrants—particularly orphaned and abandoned children—as the initial step toward what she hoped would be a global network of similar organizations. She managed to bring attention to the struggles these newcomers were facing by securing coverage in The New York Times (featuring Jeremy Bobb), which helped generate support for her work and confront prejudiced views held by both the public and city officials, including the mayor—a notably bigoted figure portrayed by John Lithgow. Throughout her efforts, she also contended with ongoing health problems. Writer-director Alejandro Monteverde’s newest film offers a thorough and engaging account of a woman who refused to surrender despite considerable obstacles stemming from her gender, nationality, and association with the Church. The movie benefits significantly from its exceptional production design, authentic period details, and beautiful visuals, as well as from the performances of Dell’Anna and Lithgow, plus many others in supporting roles. Nevertheless, this somewhat lengthy film suffers at times from uneven pacing, characters who lack depth, moments that feel excessively theatrical (especially with the music), and a backstory that isn't fully explored. Still, “Cabrini” recounts an encouraging story of someone who achieved much despite being largely overlooked. The movie helps to correct this omission while encouraging everyone to contribute toward realizing her vision of establishing a worldwide network dedicated to fostering hope.
