Goodness! The most upsetting aspect about this Cabin Fever remake might be how harshly horror fans have criticized it! It’s certainly not a standout film, nor even particularly enjoyable, but to my mind, it's no worse than countless other gory horror movies that have left me feeling restless since the year 2000. I should mention that I wasn’t all that impressed with the initial installment either, so I was willing to check this one out. It also helped that I haven't seen the original in years; my memory of it is pretty vague now. What I ended up with was a movie filled with blood and gore, sex scenes, and predictable character types, which is fairly standard for this kind of horror. What did stand out were Gavin Kelly’s excellent cinematography and Kevin Riepl's truly remarkable musical score, which even incorporates a bit from Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Plus, Louise Linton delivers a captivating performance as a fantasy-loving Deputy! But I'm getting off track. I wouldn’t watch it again, I certainly wouldn’t suggest it to serious horror fans, and while there is a surprisingly strong emotional moment near the end, overall it feels rather hollow. Still, I did find myself entertained during the viewing. Don’t judge me. 5/10
