Reno on By the Sea

6/10 · Sep 29, 2016

This movie marks Angelina Jolie’s fourth time directing, and she also penned the script alongside her former husband, Brad Pitt, who appears in a leading role. The story centers on a writer experiencing difficulty finding ideas, so he travels with his wife to a French coastal town hoping for inspiration. Initially, things seem harmonious for them amidst the calm setting, but their tranquility is disrupted by a newlywed couple moving into the neighboring residence. As tensions rise, long-held secrets come to light, which essentially defines the film's progression and conclusion. I’m unsure what has been happening with Jolie recently; she hasn't been as active in films as previously. Perhaps her responsibilities as a parent have taken precedence over her acting career. It’s nice to see her back on screen, but watching this movie and its narrative left me feeling like she’s struggling with something I can’t quite identify. Hopefully, someday someone will make a film exploring this period of her life. They both looked wonderful together onscreen, though it's disheartening to witness their separation. It isn't an exciting story full of surprises; instead, it’s a simple drama primarily focused on midlife challenges within a marriage. The acting is excellent, and the scenery is lovely, but that’s about it. At two hours in length, some viewers might find it too long because the plot moves slowly and isn't particularly captivating. This film probably won’t appeal to younger audiences, though that doesn’t guarantee older viewers will enjoy it either. It may resonate with certain individuals, and for me, it was an acceptable movie. 6/10
