It’s best not to challenge someone who has absolutely nothing left to risk. Mike Barker directed Butterfly on a Wheel, also known as Shattered, with a script by William Morrissey. Pierce Brosnan, Maria Bello, and Gerard Butler lead the cast, accompanied by music from Robert Duncan and cinematography by Ashley Rowe. Butler and Bello portray a couple with a young daughter whose lives are disrupted when a menacing Brosnan appears, claiming to have taken their child and demanding they comply with his instructions. The situation quickly escalates. Fundamentally, this is well-executed kidnap thriller filmmaking reminiscent of the style popular in the 1980s. Brosnan’s character becomes increasingly malevolent as Butler and Bello's characters become visibly more distressed. There’s a sense of mystery throughout, suggesting something unsettling exists just outside what we see on screen. The eventual plot development, which is crucial to the film’s success or failure, will ultimately determine your overall impression. I found it enjoyable. 7/10
