A young man raised by his eccentric aunt (played by Jimmy McNichol and Susan Tyrrell) is trying to get a basketball scholarship while also romancing a charming blonde woman (Julia Duffy). The situation becomes complicated when a death occurs, which brings in a detective with rigid views (Bo Svenson). The strangely named "Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker" (1981) was adapted from its source novel. The author’s inspiration came from the traditional children's rhyme about three tradesmen and particularly the line ‘The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker.’ It is also referred to as “Night Warning.” The movie contains echoes of "Psycho," but it incorporates a good deal of quirky humor that genuinely lands well and has some elements that might be considered inappropriate by today’s standards—which I appreciated. The final portion of the film is exaggerated, featuring melodramatic performances and plenty of blood, which seems to have had an impact on later movies like "Scream" and Tarantino's work. Julia Duffy stands out, especially considering her role before “Newhart.” There’s a short nude scene with her (just so you know). Some of the characters seem questionable, so it requires some interpretation; additional information can be found in the novel if you are interested. Bill Paxton appears in a small part as the main character's competitor at school. I don’t know if casting him was the right choice, but it makes for an enjoyable, disposable film. The running time is 1 hour and 33 minutes, and filming took place in Los Angeles. GRADE: B-/C+
