A really good film that I’ll gladly watch again and suggest to others. This one didn’t get much attention, and I nearly passed on it until I noticed Brittany Snow was in it; if I'd known Dave Bautista was also involved, I would have made an effort to find it. Let me address something upfront: the plot involves a secession of the southern states from the United States, beginning with an attack on a civilian target. That’s what “The South will rise again” signifies, and what people displaying the Confederate Battle Flag are representing when they show that symbol of a terrorist group. Despite that, it's a remarkably well-made portrayal of a terrible assault on innocent people. The camera work creates the feeling of "found footage"—there’s some shaky camerawork—but without the confusion about where the camera is or who put it together. It draws you in and the audience learns about what’s happening alongside the characters, very quickly. The story doesn't delay in plunging us into a situation of chaos and survival. Brittany Snow shines as just an ordinary college student; she's intelligent and resourceful, but not trained for combat or particularly skilled at surviving. Dave Bautista plays a familiar type—a former military man—but instead of the usual charming, attractive hero, his character has depth and is ready to use weapons. There are some good surprises, without overly complicated storylines (at least for a city engaged in war), plenty of action sequences, and a strong sense of realism. The most realistic aspects are also its biggest shortcomings. During a civil war, there will inevitably be four groups: the invaders, those defending, people who stay neutral, and criminals—those who seize the opportunity to harm anyone they can before someone harms them. Actually, the more I consider it, the better this movie seems. I’d probably want to expand the ending though; at the very least, there should have been a short scene afterward. As it is, the film simply concludes, but that might be intentional.
