The movie isn’t without its problems; several plot issues surface throughout this tightly constructed story. However, Ryan Reynolds may have given one of his strongest performances yet. The narrative kicks off with him waking up inside a large wooden box, equipped with just a flask, a flashlight, and his phone. Previously, he was working as a driver for an American trucking company in Iraq when the operation came under attack, and now a ransom demand of $5 million has been issued. For ninety minutes, he must rely on his phone and intelligence to locate individuals who can help him escape from this underground confinement. This all happens before GPS became standard on phones, which contributes to the escalating tension as he begins to grasp the severity of his situation. There's a particularly unpleasant phone conversation between Reynolds’ character and a personnel director attempting to deflect responsibility that genuinely prompted me to yell at the television screen. The role allows Reynolds to move beyond his usual persona and portray a sense of panicked desperation from the very beginning – and I believe he succeeds admirably. It possesses an unsettling believability, and the ending is far from simple. I would recommend seeing it.
