'Bumblebee' feels like a reasonable effort to refresh the franchise, but I didn’t really find it engaging. It’s hard to complain too much about it, and at the same time, nothing particularly good comes to mind either. Still, it ranks among the stronger entries in the series. Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena are the most memorable performers, considering both the human and robot characters. Steinfeld is a solid choice for the lead role, and Cena’s performance feels slightly different from what he typically does but is perfectly acceptable. To be honest, none of the voice actors make much of an impression, even with Angela Bassett involved. The decision to give Bumblebee his own prequel film is intriguing, though I can't say that he was particularly memorable in earlier installments. If I hadn’t already known a movie centered on him was being made, I probably wouldn’t have given the yellow robot any special attention. As someone new to the 'Transformers' films, I would have assumed Optimus Prime would have been the more obvious selection. I do like that this one focuses more on narrative development rather than replicating the over-the-top action sequences of previous movies. There are some decent scenes, but I never really felt invested in what was happening onscreen.
