I had assumed “Herbie” faced some challenges, but his difficulties seem minor when you consider what "Bumblebee" goes through! He begins as "B-127," dispatched to Earth during a period resembling the conclusion of conflict between the "Autobots" and "Decepticons" on their planet, "Cybertron." His arrival is abrupt, landing him directly into a clandestine American military operation examining unidentified phenomena. That’s when we meet “Burns” (John Cena), who realizes our yellow robot isn't ordinary and needs to be tracked down and eliminated. To make matters worse, "Blitzwing" also arrives, leading to a confrontation that leaves our hero unable to communicate and forces him into his familiar car form while he recovers from the battle and waits for reinforcements. “Charlie” (Hailee Steinfeld) finds him in a junkyard, and inadvertently triggers various signals and devices, exposing his location and attracting both allies and enemies for the expected "Transformer" battles involving lots of damage. There are some amusing moments with the conversations, and the special effects are pleasant to watch, although we follow a familiar story structure, mixed with some human connection and unremarkable performances. They attempted to give “Bumblebee” appealing qualities—imagine a less timid “C-3PO”—but as an action film, it feels drawn out and foreseeable. The ending is quite intense, though, and I believe it’s among the stronger entries in this series, making it almost worth the two hours invested.
