I’m not sure I should be enjoying this film, given what I believe about politics. The premise involves a man in his sixties who apparently wants to forge a connection with the Black community by pursuing a career as a rapper. Hollywood and political circles would likely spin that into something sensational, destroying reputations in the process. Instead, it’s presented as the story of someone experiencing a midlife crisis who feels compelled to share what he considers “the truth” with young people and minority groups through rap music—apparently because that's the only way to get through to them. The approach seems to involve condescendingly addressing the minority community, operating under the idea they wouldn’t grasp his message if he communicated with them in a straightforward manner. That perspective reveals a lot about how certain political factions perceive the very people they claim to represent. I've never really subscribed to "Social Justice" ideology; I always saw it as a means of justifying censorship by feigning outrage... but this film crosses a line, given its presumptions regarding how to connect with young people and minorities. If you belong to those groups, the portrayal might feel insulting—another politician patronizingly claiming understanding while treating you like an infant. Conversely, someone outside those communities may see it as admirable that he attempts to communicate in their way.
