Brad Pitt plays Ladybug, a hitman who’s chosen a more peaceful life until he’s pulled back into action to steal a suitcase from a train. The job seems straightforward at first – he gets the case without much trouble. However, things quickly become complicated. Also on board are Lemon (Brian Tyree Henry) and his twin, Tangerine (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who are responsible for rescuing the kidnapped son of a notorious crime boss, with the ransom money inside the suitcase. When they realize their prize is missing and the boy has a disturbing medical condition, they have to outsmart their employer while the train speeds from Tokyo to Kyoto. Then there’s Prince (Joey King), seemingly an innocent schoolgirl but harboring her own agenda, along with Kimura (Andrew Kohi), whose son she recently pushed off a roof. The plot is admittedly tangled at the beginning, but Pitt's narration and the amusing back-and-forth between Lemon, who is fixated on "Thomas the Tank Engine," and his close friend create an enjoyable experience. It’s a fairly solid action adventure, even though it feels excessively long – about twenty minutes could be cut from the initial character introductions. The script moves along briskly and has moments of genuine wit, alongside plenty of entertaining action sequences that don't overstay their welcome. I detected similarities to "Pulp Fiction" (1994), with its various storylines involving different characters that eventually intertwine. While the conclusion wasn’t particularly satisfying, it’s odd how little security there appears to be, not just on the train but at nearly every stop along the way. There's plenty of violence, yet no police presence. It’s simple, enjoyable entertainment, similar to "The Lost City," where Pitt had a supporting role alongside Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum – with a brief appearance by Ryan Reynolds as well, if you look closely. It’s disposable movie fare; it probably won't stick with you past Christmas—but it’s nice to see people having fun on the big screen without trying to be anything they’re not.
