I had the opportunity to preview “Bullet Train” at Cinemacon, when a clip was shown during Sony's presentation to an excited audience. The combination of action, humor, and oddball characters made it something I really wanted to see based on what I saw. The movie is adapted from Kotaro Isaka’s book and features Brad Pitt as Ladybug, an operative who gets called in at the last minute to replace someone else. He's told to get on a Bullet Train and steal a case from one of the passenger areas before getting off at the next stop. Ladybug is going through a period of personal change and exploring different philosophies, so he doesn’t bring a gun with him when he boards, even though his handler asked him to. The train is full of various dangerous individuals each pursuing their own objectives, and they often fail in chaotic and over-the-top ways that make things more difficult for everyone involved, leading to clashes between them as the story progresses. It's hard to discuss the other characters without giving away some of the surprises and plot twists, but Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry, playing Tangerine and Lemon respectively, are excellent, and their back-and-forth exchanges and schemes are often a standout moment. There are unexpected appearances from actors throughout the film that add to the entertainment value, and Joey King is fantastic as one of the more complex characters. Pitt is undoubtedly the lead, but the movie gives him and his supporting cast plenty of opportunities to stand out. The humor is rapid-fire and plentiful, just like the action, creating a very lively and distinct blend of Western and Asian cinema. The film does feel a little slow at one point before reaching the ending, but the strong performances and action sequences help it get there. Director David Leitch has also worked on films such as “Deadpool 2”, “Atomic Blonde,” and “John Wick,” and his talent for mixing action and comedy is evident; this is an enjoyable film with great action and humor that’s worth seeing. 4 stars out of 5.
