Bullet Train Explosion feels like a continuation of what came before, respecting the earlier work while aiming for a more contemporary feel that’s easier to grasp. The moments designed to create tension work well, and the actors give dependable performances. There's also an admirable effort to address important issues alongside all the action sequences, though it doesn’t entirely succeed. However, underdeveloped characters, a habit of spelling things out too much, and a plot that feels ultimately unimportant stop the film from having the emotional resonance it seems to be reaching for. It provides entertainment and occasionally inspires thought, but it might have pushed boundaries more than it did. Rating: B-
