Believing that aliens from Andromeda are planning to invade Earth, relatives “Teddy” (Jesse Plemons) and “Don” (Aidan Delbis) come up with a scheme to get the alien leader to talk about how he will remove his secret agents from our planet. Their plan involves some medication, two pairs of stockings, and abducting “Michelle” (Emma Stone). She’s the successful CEO of a major tech company, and they're certain she holds a high position in the enemy government. While capturing her isn’t too difficult, it quickly becomes apparent during their polite questioning that these two are – to put it gently – not entirely stable. Michelle is sure that authorities will soon notice she’s gone and start a large search; “Teddy” is equally certain they can keep her hidden until she reveals the secrets of how the aliens communicate. She attempts various approaches to gain her release, but will she ever be able to persuade them one way or another to let her go? Beyond playfully mocking some older science fiction stories, this also allows Yorgos Lanthimos to criticize corporate greed and work habits, and with Plemons delivering a strong performance as the diplomatically inclined cousin and Delbis being amusing as his somewhat less quick relative, the stage is set for a pleasant sequence of situations that presents us with a not-so-obvious series of jokes about what modern life considers genuine, significant, or simply superficial. Stone fully embraces the tone, and like Plemons, seems to be having a good time – even if it sometimes appeared uncomfortable. I did appreciate the final ten minutes, and I think this is worth seeing in theaters if you prefer your humor a bit more intellectual and you don’t happen to have an interstellar communication device on hand.
