The film largely exists to showcase the noteworthy performances of Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone, who bring considerable energy and appeal to their roles. While Yorgos Lanthimos’ signature visual aesthetic is present, and he manages a certain consistency in blending dark humor with unsettling moments, the way the story unfolds feels somewhat rambling and foreseeable, stopping it from having the depth of his earlier works. The storytelling didn't entirely succeed, though the result is still an odd and enjoyable watch that doesn’t linger in your thoughts for very long afterward. Ultimately, the movie suggests that occasionally, the most frightening threats aren't alien invaders, but what we see when we look at ourselves. Rating: B-
